Encore Consumer Capital

Encore Consumer Capital is a private equity firm formed in 2005 as a partnership between experienced principal investors and veteran industry operators from Encore Associates, Inc. for the purpose of investing in food and consumer products manufacturing and marketing companies with greater than $10 million in revenue.

Robert Brown

Robert co-founded Encore Consumer Capital in 2005. He is Chairman of Encore portfolio companies Ancient Harvest and California Splendor, and a director of Atlantic Aqua Farms, butter LONDON, Caterina Foods, LORAC, Navitas and Thanasi. Robert was the Chairman of former Encore portfolio companies Aidells Sausage Company, Isopure, PhillySwirl and tarte.

Prior to Encore, Robert was a partner at Swander Pace Capital, a private equity firm focused on investments in the consumer products industry. Robert previously was the Director of New Business Development at Foster Farms, where his responsibilities included the general management of Foster's $75MM Prepared Foods Division and corporate development. Robert began his professional career in the consumer products industry in 1991 as a consultant at Swander Pace & Company, where over time he became a Principal. He advised consumer products companies and private equity firms on matters of corporate strategy, mergers and acquisitions and competitive assessment. Robert received a BS and an MS in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University.

Robert is a native Californian and currently resides in Marin County with his wife and their three children. He is actively involved in his children’s schools and sports teams and enjoys water sports and exploring the outdoors with his family. Robert is a member of the Leadership Council of the Positive Coaching Alliance, a national non-profit developing “Better Athletes, Better People” by working to provide youth and high school athletes a positive, character-building youth sports experience.

Kevin Murphy

Kevin joined Encore Consumer Capital in 2005. Kevin is Chairman of Atlantic Aqua Farms, butter LONDON, Fantasy Cookie, LORAC and ThunderWorks, and is a director of MyChelle.  He was a director of former Encore portfolio companies Juice Tyme and tarte. He is responsible for deal origination and execution as well as portfolio company oversight.

Prior to joining Encore Kevin worked at Genstar Capital. He began his career with PricewaterhouseCoopers. Kevin earned a BBA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley.

Kevin lives in San Francisco with his wife, two sons and white Labrador Gracie. He is a former director of Fort Mason Center, the San Francisco Conservation Corps and The Guardsmen.

Scott co-founded Encore Consumer Capital in 2005. Scott is Chairman of Encore's portfolio companies Brownie Brittle, Full Sail, MyChelle and Van Law Foods. Scott was the Chairman of former Encore portfolio companies FreshKO, Juice Tyme, Mesa and Zuke's.

Prior to Encore, Scott was a partner at Swander Pace Capital, a private equity firm focused on investments in the consumer products industry, where he served as a Director of numerous consumer companies including Eagle Pack Pet Food, Liberty Brand Products, Nonni's Food Company, and ST Specialty Foods. Scott's experience in the consumer products industry began in 1994 at Swander Pace & Company where he advised consumer products companies and private equity firms on matters of corporate strategy, mergers and acquisitions and competitive assessment. Scott received a BS with distinction and an MS in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University. He is also a member of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society.

Scott lives in Marin County with his wife and three daughters. He is an active runner, enjoys attending Stanford games, San Francisco Giants games and remains a passionate fan of his native Detroit sports teams.

Kisen joined Encore Consumer Capital in 2006. He is a director of butter LONDON and Fantasy Cookie. He also helped manage Encore’s investment in Aidells Sausage Company, was a director of Isopure, FreshKO and Mesa, and worked closely with tarte. Kisen is responsible for deal origination and execution as well as portfolio company oversight.

Before joining Encore, Kisen worked at CapitalSource Finance, where he provided credit facilities for middle-market companies. Previously, Kisen was an Associate at Piper Jaffray & Co. in their Consumer Mergers and Acquisitions group, where he advised leading consumer products and retail/restaurant companies. He began his career at Morgan Keegan & Co. in their investment banking group. Kisen graduated from Duke University with a BS in Economics.

Kisen lives in San Francisco, CA where he enjoys spending time with his wife and their two sons. He is an avid sports fan, and is especially passionate about his alma mater.

Bill Shen

Director

Bill joined Encore Consumer Capital in 2008. He is a director of Ancient Harvest, Brownie Brittle, California Splendor, Navitas and Thanasi. Bill is responsible for deal origination and execution as well as portfolio company oversight.

Prior to Encore, he led corporate development for Nest Collective, a natural and organic consumer products company. Bill began his career at Swander Pace & Company (later acquired by Kurt Salmon), a strategy consulting firm servicing food, beverage, apparel, and retail clients, where he was a member of the firm’s Private Equity Practice and worked on multiple consumer transactions. After Kurt Salmon, Bill led the food and beverage practice of a boutique investment bank. Bill graduated with a BA in Public Policy from Stanford University.

Bill lives in Marin County with his wife where they enjoy training for triathlons. He previously served as the Chair of the Stanford Associates Board of Governors, the Board President for Wu Yee Children’s Services (a non-profit social services agency), and was a member of the Board of Trustees of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in San Francisco.

Kate joined Encore Consumer Capital in 2016. She is responsible for deal origination and execution as well as portfolio company oversight.

Prior to joining Encore, she worked at Lineage Capital where she focused on investing in owner-managed businesses in the lower middle market. Kate received a BA in Economics from Boston College and an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Kate lives in San Francisco with her husband. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, running, hiking, and getting out of the city to explore Northern California.

Nichole joined Encore Consumer Capital in 2014. She is responsible for due diligence, deal execution, and portfolio management.

Prior to joining Encore, Nichole was an investment banking analyst at Lazard, where she focused on both sell-side and buy-side middle market transactions in the food and beverage sector. Nichole earned a BSB with distinction in Finance from the University of Minnesota.

Nichole lives in San Francisco, CA where she enjoys running, indoor cycling, movies, and exploring the San Francisco Bay Area.

Max joined Encore Consumer Capital in 2013. He is responsible for due diligence, deal execution, and portfolio management.

Previously, Max was a Senior Consultant at Kurt Salmon (formerly Swander Pace & Company), where he consulted on private equity due diligence and corporate strategy engagements in the consumer products and retail industries. Max earned a BA with distinction in Economics from Stanford University.

Max lives in San Francisco, CA where he enjoys cooking, movies and passionately supporting Stanford sports and his native Los Angeles sports teams.

Prior to joining Encore, Paul was an Associate at Freeman Spogli & Co., a middle market private equity firm focused on the consumer and distribution sectors. Previously, Paul was an investment banking analyst and associate at Barclays, where he advised companies in the consumer and retail sectors. Paul earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania.

Paul lives in San Francisco, CA where he enjoys running, cycling, skiing, backpacking and supporting his native Seattle sports teams.

Prior to joining Encore, Jamie was a Senior Associate at The Parthenon Group, where he advised a variety of clients on private equity due diligence and corporate strategy engagements in consumer products, retail, and technology. Jamie received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Public Policy from Brown University.

Jamie lives in San Francisco, CA where he enjoys golf, water sports, and backpacking.

Megan rejoined Encore Consumer Capital in 2013 and is involved with financial management, reporting, operations and investor relations.

Prior to Encore, Megan was Vice President, Finance at Baby Matters, LLC a manufacturer of an innovative infant sleep product. At Baby Matters, she oversaw all aspects of business development, regulatory compliance and financial functions. She previously worked at Encore from 2005 to 2007 as a Vice President responsible for fundraising, deal origination, and deal execution. Prior to joining Encore, Megan was an Associate at Swander Pace Capital, a private equity firm focused on investments in the consumer products industry. Megan began her career in San Francisco at Harris Williams & Co., a middle market investment banking firm. Megan received a B.S. from the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce.

Megan and her husband have four young children.

Raigan joined Encore Consumer Capital in 2007. She manages all operational aspects of Encore including facilities, human resources, IT, accounting, event planning and marketing.

Previously, Raigan was an Office Manager at Groupe Insearch where she managed all facets of running the San Francisco office and assisted in the opening of their satellite office in San Mateo. Prior to joining Groupe Insearch, Raigan was a recruiter at Insurance Personnel Services. Raigan earned a BS in Psychology magna cum laude from Saint Mary's College of California and an MS in Marketing magna cum laude from Golden Gate University.

When she isn’t cooking, crafting or hosting parties with her husband, Raigan loves to take her maltipoo Bailey for hikes on the beautiful trails in her native East Bay. She is a 49er faithful and counts down the days until the season begins every year.

Steve joined Encore Consumer Capital in 2015 and is a board member of the Encore portfolio companies Ancient Harvest and Fantasy Cookie Company.

Steve brings over 30 years of consumer products industry experience including strategic planning, brand development, consumer marketing, line management and transactional leadership. Most recently, Steve was Chairman of private-equity backed Rudi’s Organic Bakery for five years, until the company was sold to Hain Celestial. Prior to Rudi’s, Steve served as a lead M&A advisor for several companies in the natural and organic industry including Horizon Organic Dairy, Ethnic Gourmet frozen dinners, Autumn Harp cosmetics and Cornnuts snacks.

Steve began his career at General Foods (now the Kraft Heinz Company) where, over 13 years, he held positions of increasing responsibility including Vice President of Marketing for Established and New Brands in the $800 million Beverage Division. Steve developed the first of its kind in-store branded merchandising program that drove significant incremental profitability while building brand awareness.

Steve received an AB degree from Hamilton College and an MBA from Harvard University.

Steve is from New Jersey, where he resides with his wife.

Gary co-founded Encore Consumer Capital in 2005. He currently serves as a director of Brownie Brittle, Caterina Foods, Fantasy Cookie, FreshKO and Mesa Foods, and previously was a director of former Encore portfolio companies Aidells Sausage Company and PhillySwirl. He is also a member of the Board of Directors at TreeHouse Foods (NYSE: THS).

Prior to Encore, Mr. Smith formed Encore Associates in 2001 following a successful 40 year career at Safeway. While at Safeway, he served as Senior Vice President of Marketing where he was credited with the development and implementation of many of Safeway's industry-leading merchandising and marketing programs during his watch. These include Safeway's category management process, Safeway's customer loyalty card and the company's premium private label program. In 1998 Mr. Smith accepted The Private Label Manufacturers Associations "Retailer of the Year" for his role in the development of the Safeway SELECT brand and private label merchandising strategy.

Eric Ryan is the Co-Founder and Chief Brand Architect of Method Products, Inc. and Olly PBC (Olly). Eric has advised Encore on matters of strategic branding and marketing since 2005, and served on the board of directors of Isopure.

Glen Habern

Glenn Habern has over 35 years of experience in the retail and consumer products business. He joined Encore in 2009 after retiring from WalMart following 20 years of service. During his last 10 years at Walmart, Glenn served as Senior Vice President of New Business Development for the U.S. Division. He has served on numerous industry committees including the early days of the UPC and EDI initiatives. In addition, Glenn has testified before U.S. Congress on the standards for EDI.  Previous to WalMart, he held executive positions with Tyson Foods, H.E.B., Fingerhut and was National Director of the Retail and Consumer Products consulting practice at Ernst and Young.  Glenn advises Encore on matters of go-to-market strategy and provides crucial insights into major national retail customers.
